Live from Annunciation...

Zen What?

Zentangle That's What!

Zentangles are miniature pieces of unplanned, abstract, black and white art created on a 3.5-inch square paper tile. Using an ensemble of simple, structured patterns these art pieces are not only exquisite but fun and relaxing to create.  The Annunciation students embraced this art method and created some beautiful artwork. Here's a sneak peek...

Get ready to bid on these one-of-a-kind art pieces on Auction night. Why?  Because they are amazing—and our children made them!

Fund-a-Need Preview

As the excitement is building for New York City, we are also hearing some Fund-a-Need buzz.  Mr. Nichols is downright giddy!  Have you heard some of the Science update plans?  Well, here is a preview for you:

  • Science House - modeled after the above photo at the Science Museum, the Annunciation "Science House" would be located in the Middle School but accessible to all K-8 students.  Not only that, but Middle School and lower grade students will work together - getting their hands dirty and opening their minds to the vast world of Science.
  • The Middle School Science classroom will get a face-lift... brand new state of the art Science Tables storing lab kits in the convenient cabinets and updated science equipment including:  scales, safety glasses, beakers and more.
  • Picture this... the "Annunciation Robotics Program" where kids use a brand new 3-D printer and learn about robotics and robot programming.  This type of learning has been known to inspire and excite future generations of researchers, engineers and scientists.

Happy Mother's Day!

In honor of Mother's Day, can you guess who this Annunciation mother is? Here is a hint, she is also a New Yorker!

This photograph was taken in 1957 while she attended Saint Joachim Anne Catholic School in Queens Village, New York.  For the school's Vocations Parade, she dressed in this formal attire.  Give us your best guess—and Happy Mother's Day to all of the Annunciation moms!

Start Spreading the News...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3cYSzERaRo

Frank Sinatra, with a little help from Beth Woods and the Donations Team, has created a song just for Annunciation to get us in the mood to turn in our donations this week (by Friday's deadline)!  Listen to the tune above and sing it with the new and improved lyrics below.  It is sure to be a HIT!

Start spreading the news…
It’s coming very soon
We want you to BE a part of it…New York, New York

The parents of Annunciation
They are longing to play
Right through the very heart of it
New York, New York

We want you to party up in that city
That doesn't sleep
To place a bid or two
Who will be Top of the heap?

These little auction blues
They are melting away
To make a brand new start of it (for the kids)
With your donated items!

If you can help us out
We will make it so easy for you
It's up to you...
New York, New York

Meet Your NYC Concierge!

Meet Kate McMahon—Preschool Concierge

Kate has four kids at Annunciation, a son in Seventh Grade, daughters in Fifth Grade and Second Grade, and a son in Preschool.
Favorite part of the Auction: Kate loves the Friday set-up.  She is inspired by the number of people in the community who come together to make this event happen.  The buzz of busy people, seeing the transformation of the building into a beautiful venue, the laughter shared, the anticipation for a great party, and all the good things that come of it for our very special Annunciation Catholic School!
Favorite part of NYC?  The Broadway shows.  She loves, loves, loves the musicals!

Meet Allison O’Brien—Kindergarten Concierge

Allison has two daughters at Annunciation, one in Third Grade and the other is in Kindergarten.
Favorite part of Auction:  Signing up for parties and then going to them throughout the year.  She always meets someone new at a party and makes a connection with another family.  This makes her feel more connected to the Annunciation community.
Favorite thing about NYC?  That's a hard one to narrow down, but it has to be the vast cross-section of people you can see by walking around Manhattan on a given day.  There's nowhere else like it.

Meet Sarah Klein—First Grade Concierge

Sarah has two kids at Annunciation and a third one joining us next year. She has a daughter in Fourth Grade and a son in First Grade.
Favorite part of the Auction: Perusing the pictures Anne Bjorkstrand takes of the kids.
Favorite things to do in NYC: Sit on the rooftop of the MET museum with friends and walk across the Brooklyn bridge at night.

Meet Beth Woods—Second Grade Concierge

Beth has two boys at Annunciation, a Fourth and a Second Grader.
Favorite part of the Auction: Walking into the school and seeing it transformed into the theme of the night.  It is such a fun night with a great community!
If she travels back to NYC…Beth would go to a Yankee/Red Sox Game at Yankee Stadium with her husband.  And, of Course the Sox would win!  To top it off, they would get picked up in the Cash Cab to win some extra money to shop!

Meet Teresa Meschini—Third Grade Concierge

Teresa has two kids at Annunciation, a son in Fifth Grade and a daughter in Third Grade.
Favorite part of the Auction: The excitement of the people and knowing that we are raising funds for a great school.  She loves seeing old friends and getting to know new ones.  Oh, and the wine is usually not so bad.
Favorite things to do in NYC?  Teresa loves to shop at  ABC Carpet & Home store and get lost in cool neighborhoods—She is good at that!

Meet Jen Radam—Fourth Grade Concierge

Jen has two daughters at Annunciation, one in Seventh Grade and one in Fourth Grade.
Favorite part of the Auction: The Fund-A-Need portion of the Live Auction.  It is heartwarming to watch the kindness and generosity of the Annunciation community at work.
Favorite thing about visiting NYC?  Taking in a Broadway show and the theatre district.

Meet Megan Schaefbauer—Fifth Grade Concierge

Megan has a Fifth Grade daughter at Annunciation.
Favorite part of the Auction: The Silent Auction.
Favorite part of NYC?  Megan was actually born in New York (Long Island) and both of her parents grew up in NYC.  She still has many relatives that live there.  So she has a lot to love about NYC but she has a special place in her heart for Central Park.

Meet Britney Stark—Sixth Grade Concierge

Britney has two sons at Annunciation, a Sixth and a Fifth Grader
Favorite part of Auction: The unique and fun atmosphere created by the wonderful, creative parents who worked on the Auction.  She also loves the evening spent with friends and the opportunity to meet new people. Britney feels blessed to be surrounded by this community.
Favorite thing about NYC? She has too many favorites!  She loves the energy and the food most of all but also all the little hidden neighborhood joints, small shops, the food, central park, the sheer massiveness of it all, the plays, the food, the constant pulse of activity, oh yeah...and did she mention the food?

Meet Deb Burke—Seventh Grade Concierge

Deb has two sons at Annunciation, one in Seventh Grade and the other in Fourth Grade
Favorite part of the Auction: The Silent Auction because it gives everyone a chance to say hi,  while trying to find the perfect item to bid on (and hopefully win) and support the school.
Favorite part of NYC? She loves two very different places in NYC.  Time Square for its lights, busyness and sense of excitement.  The other is Central Park for its amazing green space and paths—a slice of calm within the bustling city.

Meet Colleen Werle—Eighth Grade Concierge

Colleen has three boys at Annunciation, an Eighth Grader, Sixth Grader and a First Grader.
Favorite part of the Auction: The Live Auction because she can't wait to see what Grant Hartley purchases on a whim each year.
Favorite part of NYC: To shop in the markets for fake designer purses.

Hot Off the Press!

What is this?  And what does it have to do with the Auction?  This piece of machinery was responsible for printing all of our invitations for this year's auction... literally, hot off the press!

Studio on Fire in Minneapolis printed our invitations which you should receive very soon in the mail.  We were able to tour the facility which oozes coolness.
